After 24 years, Vladimir Putin visited North Korea to meet with leader Kim Jong Un. The Russian president, who was received with a great ceremony, went with a clear objective: to strengthen diplomatic relations with the leader of the Asian country to achieve his support.

The meeting began this Tuesday and on Wednesday both presidents signed a “strategic partnership” agreement. In detail, this pact ensures assistance from both North Korea and Russia in the event of aggression against any of the parties to the treaty.

Furthermore, although the specifications were not officially clarified, the treaty covers other types of dimensions. For example, it covers issues related to security, trade, investment, and cultural and humanitarian ties. Ultimately, the pact leads to closer political, economic and military interaction, the most significant since the Cold War, according to analysts.

military alliance

“This association becomes a military alliance of mutual defense, the highest contract that can exist between the two countries,” explains Patricio Carmody, specialist in international relations, in dialogue with El Litoral. “North Korea already gave a lot of ammunition to the Russians that was used a lot in the war against Ukraine,” he elaborates.

What is behind Vladimir Putin’s visit to his ally Kim Jong-un?

As specified by CNN with data from the South Korean Ministry of Defense, in February 2024 Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, sent large quantities of 152 mm artillery shells and 122 mm multiple rocket launcher ammunition to Moscow. Along these lines, during the recent meeting Kim Jong Un was quick to assure that he offered his “full support” in relation to Ukraine.

For his part, Putin thanked North Korea for “unwavering support” for Russia and justified this meeting and the practices of his regime by saying that he is fighting against decades of imperialist policies imposed by the United States. Furthermore, he stated that neither he nor Jong-un will tolerate “blackmail” from the West, in reference to the sanctions imposed on North Korea due to the development of weapons banned by the UN.

multipolar world

According to The Guardian, Kim Jong-un described the agreement as the “strongest treaty ever signed between the two countries” and as an opportunity to “accelerate the creation of a new multipolar world.” These statements demonstrated that the bilateral relationship between the two is stronger than ever, bound by one of the most relevant pacts for the geopolitical scene of the last fifty years.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said Putin’s visit to North Korea illustrates how Russia is trying, in desperation, to develop and strengthen relations with countries that can provide what the country needs to continue the war in Ukraine, according to reports The Associated Press.

In a context where both countries are strongly sanctioned by the international community, Russia for the invasion of Ukraine and North Korea for the development of illegal nuclear weapons, Putin seeks to consolidate an anti-West alignment (who he says “isolates them from the world”) and form its own commercial and military exchange block.

In fact, published by an official North Korean media, Putin assured during his meetings with Jong-un that alternative trade mechanisms will be developed that are not controlled by the West and that they will jointly oppose illegitimate unilateral restrictions. At the same time he confirmed that they will build an equal and indivisible security architecture in Eurasia despite pressure and threats from the US.
