According to Clarín, this occurred due to the combination of various extreme temperatures in that area, below -10 degrees, specifically in Río Grande.
In fact, several videos went viral in the last day, showing that the sea waves were completely motionless.
The situation comes hand in hand with the extreme cold that Patagonia has experienced. In fact, on the Chilean side, Balmaceda recorded the lowest temperature on Earth: -21 degrees.
Frozen sea in Patagonia
Meteorologist Alejandro Sepúlveda indicated in Meganoticias that this situation is likely to occur in places near the poles.
“It is rare, but from time to time it happens that salt water freezes in high latitudes, closer to the poles,” he indicated.
In this sense, Sepúlveda pointed out that the possibility of freezing, in those areas, may be higher due to the proximity to river mouths.
“The water temperature here is less than 1 or 2 degrees below zero. Now, be careful, what freezes is the part that is closest to the beach and as you move away from the coast, the upper part of the sea freezes,” he said.
