At what temperature do dogs and cats start to feel cold?

Pets require a lot of care and low temperatures can cause illness. Therefore, you have to be aware of situations that could expose them to the cold and keep in mind that their fur does not fully protect them.

Cold in dogs and cats

Although their fur can protect them a little from low temperatures, it is not always enough. According to specialists, a puppy begins to feel cold between 7°C and 12°C. Additionally, some adult dogs can feel it at 8°C. However, from -6°C onwards, all dogs may be at risk of hypothermia.

On the other hand, for cats, with a temperature below 22°C they can already feel the cold. A good rule to know if dogs and cats are cold is: if you are cold, most likely your pet is too.

Low temperatures affect pets differently depending on the age and size of the dog. In the case of cats, some have more fur but this does not mean that they are covered.

How to protect them

Please note that if pets live indoors, sudden changes in temperature should be avoided when they go out. If they go out when it rains, it may be necessary for them to wear clothing made of water-repellent material to prevent them from getting wet.

The same goes for dogs and cats that live outside the house. It is essential to give them a space that protects them from rain or low temperatures. Additionally, if possible, it is important that they do not have direct contact with the ground when they sleep. You can use a quilt, a mat, or any comfortable surface.

The first thing to keep in mind to protect them is to maintain a good diet, not only in quantity but also in quality. At the same time, it is important to clarify that they must be given the appropriate proportions according to their size, physical activity and age.

Hydration is also just as important as food. Always keep the water fresh and clean.

On the other hand, the use of clothing is not necessary, although it is recommended for older dogs and those with osteoarthritis.

Finally, if for any reason your pet gets wet, it is important to dry it completely, especially its paws, ears, chest and abdomen.
