Ramallah, June 28. — The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned this Friday that more than 10,000 sick and injured people in Gaza need medical attention abroad, Prensa Latina reported.
“We demand that medical evacuation be facilitated on all possible routes, including Rafah and Karem Shalom, to Egypt, the West Bank, East Jerusalem and from there to other countries if necessary,” the official wrote on his X account on the social network.
Continuous medical evacuation is necessary in a safe, timely, transparent and organized manner, he stressed.
He added that “these patients urgently need special, life-saving treatment, which they cannot receive in Gaza.”
The director general of the WHO yesterday celebrated the evacuation of 21 patients from the coast.
This is the first time since the Rafah border crossing was closed on May 7, Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
On that day, the Israeli army attacked a border crossing to justify blocking the entry of weapons and ammunition to the Islamic Resistance Movement and its allies.
The operation sparked a wave of international condemnation, as Rafah is the only gateway for medicine, fuel and food to reach the region besieged for more than seven months.
At the beginning of the ground offensive in the area, more than a million Palestinians were taking refuge in the nearby city of the same name, but after almost two months of military campaign, fewer than 60,000 remain, according to the United Nations.
Health Minister Majed Abu Ramadan, in an interview with the Voice of Palestine radio station last month, condemned that the situation of the sector in the coastal region is catastrophic.
More than 80 percent of Gaza’s hospitals and health centers are out of service due to continued Israeli aggression, he denounced at the time.
