Polls project high participation in French legislative elections

The prevailing polarization seems to push voters to exercise their right this Sunday, judging by the polls released by Elabe, IFOP-Fiducial and Ipsos, on the final day of the electoral campaign ahead of votes for which almost 50 are called. millions of people.

According to Elabe’s research for the media BFM TV and La Tribune Dimanche, participation in the first round would be between 63 and 65 percent, that of IFOP-Fiducial for Le Figaro, LCI and Sud Radio reflects 67 and that of Ipsos for Le Monde, Radio France and France TV on 63.

Only 47.5 percent of voters voted in the 2022 legislative elections, confirming a downward trend after 64.4 percent in 2002, 60.4 percent in 2007, 57.2 percent in 2012, and 48.7 percent in 2017.

The prevailing political situation may explain the surge in voter interest following the dissolution of the National Assembly by President Emmanuel Macron on 9 June and the call for new parliamentary elections, in reaction to the sweeping victory of the far-right National Rally (RN) party in the European elections that day.

Boosted by this victory and by the advantage that all the polls give it, RN aspires to achieve an absolute majority in the Assembly in the legislative elections of June 30 and July 7 (second round), which would allow it to have the position of prime minister, which would impose an uncomfortable political cohabitation on Macron.

Several opinion studies show the concern of half of French people about the eventual coming to power of the extreme right, while more than a third of them estimate that such a scenario would be the best to solve problems such as the loss of purchasing power by citizens. and insecurity.

The polls place the left-wing party bloc Nuevo Frente Popular behind RN, with almost 30 percent of voting intentions, and even further behind the ruling party, with 20 percent, a projection that if fulfilled at the polls would mean that the governing party Renacimiento and its allies would fall from 245 deputies in the dissolved National Assembly to just over 100.
