Is it possible to give a second life and completely transform a dull, unlit apartment into the house of our dreams? Yes it is. Going from a dark house to a home full of lifecontemporary and very functional, is something that the interior designer Laura Martínez has been able to carry out in a home in Sant Cugat del Vallés (Barcelona). And it has turned a space without style into a house in a Nordic style, through a renovation in which the key and protagonist elements have been the glass dividers.

But it has not been the only resource that has been carried out, because there have also been replaced some old partitions and doors. Of course, without removing privacy and differentiating the uses of each environment. Thanks to both solutions, it has been possible to provide the home with a greater feeling of spaciousnessin which the rooms have been connected, leaving pass natural light. At the same time, it has been possible to add that missing functionality, completely marking the Nordic style chosen for the house. But since it is more surprising to see than to tell, we leave you this before and after. You’re going to love the change!

A poorly functional hall before the renovation.

Before: a poorly functional hall

The hall, or entrance to this house, was quite basic and without style. That is, a space that could be get much more out of it. Furthermore, despite having few square meters, they could be used much better to make it more beautiful and functional. And above all brighter! We already know that the hall is the first impression and image of our home, so, even if it is small, it has to be a pleasant corner that already gives clues to our taste for the decoration, order and cleanliness of our house. How will it have turned out?

A practical, bright and stylish hall after the renovation.

After: a custom hall

This has been the change! The interior designer has replaced the old access door to the kitchen with a multifunctional furniture which has been custom designed, in a white lacquered wood and oak finish. And it is a floor-to-ceiling module, which, at the same time, acts as a dividing wall, seat to take off shoes and cupboard with storage for coats and shoes.

Strategically it has also been designed transparent fixed glass in the central part of the furniture to enhance the light entry natural, we see how flows from the kitchen window to the very entrance door of the house. All this to follow that visual sensation of depth that, in addition to being very successful, has been achieved.

A room without harmony before being renovated.

Laura Martínez Interior Designer

Before: a room without harmony

The room had enough light and spaciousnessbut the furniture and the floor they had no harmony, which indirectly made the space end up being much darker. In fact, there is no defined style in the house either, which ends up making the aesthetics it sought to give even more disconcerting. The interior designer wanted the entire house to be at the same level and style, so that there was much more visual connection and to give that luminosity that the previous furniture was stealing. Shall we see the after of this living-dining room? Come on!

A living-dining room after the renovation.

Yael Valles

After: a very warm and comfortable living-dining room

Prior to the renovation, a door closed the hall to the dining room and living room. The new design has eliminated partitions and doors to connect the spaces fluidly, resulting in a warm and very welcoming space. From the very entrance door of the house, luminosity now flows throughout the day area. The dark floor, which was what mainly turned off the room, has been replaced by a new wooden flooring in light oak, warm and more in line with the Nordic style of the new furniture. We keep watching it!

A dining room with custom furniture that is very warm and cozy.

After: with strong and versatile furniture

From this other angle, we see this living-dining room in more detail. Laura Martínez’s team has custom designed different sideboards, shelves and base units to store household items and other belongings, all with pure lines, without handles, finished in white and oak wood. The dining table shows its forcefulness, with a thick natural solid wood top and black iron legs. For him sofa and dining room chairs Soft gray upholstered fabrics have been chosen.

A basic kitchen without style before the renovation.

Laura Martínez Interior Designer

Before: a basic kitchen without style

The kitchen seemed very narrow with an endless countertop. If we add to this how basic it is, it makes this kitchen fulfill its function, but it is not at all stylish. Furthermore, we see how before the renovation, the kitchen was a totally independent stay. The walls and partitions made it a much darker space, when in a room like this, natural light is very necessary to make it as comfortable as possible.

A well-distributed kitchen after the renovation.

Yael Valles

After: a well-distributed kitchen with an office

Wow! This is indeed a change. The endless countertop has been replaced by a rectangular floor plan that has allowed you to play with the furniture arranged in a U shape. The renovation has eliminated the old access door, which, as we have already seen, was located in what is now the hall module, and it has been decided to open access through a side wall, which gives a semi-open kitchen to the living room.

Furthermore, the old partition, which has been replaced by a fixed glass partition at half height, makes the kitchen visually connected to the living-dining room, but the use of each space is also respected. Storage cabinets are distributed under the glass partition and a small office for two. With the aim of not overloading. As for some details, such as the recessed hood, they contribute to a coherent and uniform aesthetic. We love!

Before: a dull and outdated bedroom

Although we love simplicity and minimalism, sometimes, if we don’t get the decoration right, we can give an outdated, totally unwanted image. This is the case of this bedroom which, before the renovation, was very bland and It did not inspire calm, relaxation and warmth. It needed an urgent change to make it such a pleasant stay, that it invited an unbeatable rest, without interruptions. Will they have achieved it?

Simple and beautiful en-suite bedroom after the renovation.

Yael Valles

After: a simple suite-style bedroom

We really like this simplicity! And the headboard is a simple white panel, backlit, with two white and gold reading lights on each side. A textured wallpaper in a very soft gray tone has been chosen for the wall. Everything has been selected to create an atmosphere of warmth and serenity, always in line with the decorative style of the rest of the home. A sign that in simplicity, there is pleasure, but a well-chosen simplicity and always thought with great style. This bedroom is full of ideas to copy!

An exposed dressing room that generated visual chaos

Laura Martínez Interior Designer

Before: a dressing room that generated visual chaos

This locker room created a lot of noise and visual chaos. Despite being independent of the bedroom through a door, it was so dark and all the clothes were so piled up that it gave the impression of storage room feeling. Dressing rooms are usually very functional to be able to place and organize all our clothes and shoes, but it is also furniture that must be chosen very carefully and with very good thought and, above all, that has a very good image externally.

A large dressing room finished in white.

Yael Valles

After: a large dressing room finished in white

Without a doubt, the dressing room is the most substantial change in the entire master suite. As we have seen, before the renovation it was a closed cube, without light and very uncomfortable. The wall that separated the bedroom and dressing room has been replaced by a storage unit with a fixed glass screen on top. This resource has allowed the creation of a large dressing room, with space to move comfortably and that offers sufficient storage. The natural light, which flows from the bedroom through the glass, is enhanced by the white finish of all the furniture. A ten!
