The Catalan artist Antoni Amat inaugurates this Thursday, at 7:00 p.m. at the Vanrell Gallery in Palma, the exhibition Alchemy. This is an exhibition that groups different abstract pieces worked from light, in which the artist uses a palette of intense colors and strokes that play with various construction elements that overlap, and that in some cases reach fracture the boundaries of the two-dimensional framework of the canvases.

«My work process has a architectural point. I build the elements that I will insert into the frames from previous sketches. Then I go to the constructive part and from there, when I have everything ready, I start painting. “It is a sculpture introduced into the same canvas,” explains Amat, while clarifying that the collection presented in Alquimia was born around 2021, in the difficult years of the pandemic and that it is a closed series that will end soon.

«They are works that They are born in difficult years and they continue in the post-pandemic. This is a series of pieces that I will probably finish in 2024. My interests are materialization of the gesture and the expansion of painting to transgress the limits of the square of the painting itself,” says the artist.

The author works with a luminous palette, which has solar and positive elements. “At this point in my life I work on light, without dramatic elements, and always looking for beauty through the colors and shapes on the canvases,” he says.

Evolution

For his part, the art historian Alexandre Roa Casellas, who signs the exhibition room text, points out that “the Amat’s stylistic evolution It does not make its mark unrecognizable. In a more minimalist way, he continues to be interested in the use of simple colors that balance each othernow in a much more concentrated way”, in reference to the purification process that Alchemy entails, but pointing out the stylistic continuity of the author.

Regarding the future, Amat recognizes that it is in an embryonic and changing moment in which it has various lines of work raised. Almost closing the series Alchemyassumes that the creation process is very solitary despite the different readings or exhibitions that have marked his career, among which books by anthropology or hinduism. “It is a process where everything you live, read or experience is part of what your work is,” explains this creator who previously presented in the prestigious Maeght gallery and who trained at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. Since then she has exhibited in places such as Frankfurt, New York or Miami, in different fairs and in individual and collective exhibitions.
