The Argentine photographer who made the cover of Coldplay’s new album

Coldplay announced in the last few hours that on October 4th they will publish Moon Music, their tenth studio album. News that resonated throughout the world, but especially in Argentina, since the album cover, an imposing sky crossed by a rainbow, is the work of a local photographer.

His name is Matias Alonso Revelli, is 31 years old and was born in Bahía Blanca, province of Buenos Aires, where he continues to live. “13 years ago, after finishing high school, I didn’t know what to do and it occurred to me to start taking photos. Until today, I haven’t stopped,” says the artist in dialogue with ROLLING STONE.

Matías’ specialty is photos of landscapes and skies that he then sells to different parts of the world, and in different formats, through the Internet. This was how a person close to the singer Chris Martin He came across the photo that was going to become the cover of the British band’s next album.

How did Coldplay’s proposal come to you?

In the least expected way for something like this. The band contacted me directly by email. I, disbelieving, did not believe them. I let them know and they sent me a photo. Then, through a video call, I finished confirming that it was real.

What were you doing when you found out and who did you tell?

I was at home, probably editing photos. The first people I told were my wife, my father and my sister, who were as surprised as I was.

What role does music play in your work?

Music is very important in my work, more than anything when I edit. It is very inspiring to me and helps me a lot to maintain a more constant editing pace. Also, I often use the lyrics of the songs I listen to that day to title my photos.

Do you remember when and where you took the photo?

I looted and edited the photo during the pandemic, I took it in the patio of my house when my old man called me to tell me to go out and look at the sky. I went outside and found that rainbow right above my head, took a couple of photos of it and finished the work inside on my computer. Four years later, it is the cover of Coldplay’s next album.

As everything is between Argentines, the design of the cover and packaging was done Pilar Zetaanother local artist who has been working with the band for a long time. Chris Martin.

The new album will be published in different formats, including vinyl, and will be made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. Approximately nine PET plastic bottles will be used per copy, coming from post-consumer waste. This initiative is expected to avoid the creation of more than 25 metric tons of new plastic and reduce CO₂ emissions by 85% compared to traditional 140-gram vinyl production.

Meanwhile, this Friday, June 21, you can hear the first preview of Moon Music“Feels Like I’m Falling in Love.”
