We tested an electronic reader that pretends to be a paper book

Not everything is Kindle. Although Amazon monopolizes the e-reader market, there are also other interesting alternatives on the market, such as the Onyx Boox Note Air 3C. The highlight of this device, in addition to being an excellent e-book reader, is that it incorporates an operating system Android 12 and the possibility of installing applications, which gives us the freedom to use our favorite apps, especially for work.

The device sports a 10.3-inch e-Ink Kaleido 3 panel, capable of displaying up to 4,096 colors and 16 shades of gray. E-ink screens are designed specifically for simulate the experience of reading on paper, reducing eye strain associated with traditional screens. Although the color range is not as wide as that of LED or OLED screens, nor is it as bright, it is suitable for viewing colorful documents or books with illustrations, ideal if you are looking for a device to read comics.

Equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, the Note Air 3C is enough to open simple applications, that is, it is not designed for very demanding games or platforms, since the refresh rate of an ink screen is very low, and the experience can be negative. It is designed for reading, web browsing, and use of educational or productivity applications.

Thanks to having access to Google Play, we have tried a notepad, and Evernote, even browsing social networks, but with a lot of patience, and only to see images and text, not video. You can also connect applications like Google Drive to save all your books or documents, and open them later on the Note Air 3C.

The device includes a battery-free electronic pen that takes advantage of Wacom EMR technology to provide a fluid writing experience, ideal for drawing. Although we prefer the classic Bluetooth-connected keyboard, which makes the Note Air 3C a perfect companion if what you want is to write, light, with a long battery life, a screen that works perfectly outdoors and does not tire your eyes, and most importantly, without distractions that make you lose focus.

The Onyx Boox Note Air 3C is a good choice for those looking for an e-book that can do more. It combines the features of an Android tablet, with some limitations, with the convenience of an e-book reader. Furthermore, thanks to the fact that it is capable of displaying colors, it makes it a more usable device, that is, with better contrasts if we open applications or like books with color illustrations. Now, keep in mind that it has a price of 550 euros, so it might be better to go directly for a tablet.
