The career of the Ecuadorian writer Margarita Barriga from Baquerizo has been marked by its titles for children, with stories like Wilson and Panchito, Sighsthe book series Mine, and more. Now, the author debuts with a work for adults. Is about Contest (prohibited for people over 100 years old)which Margarita will present this Thursday night, June 27, at the Sánchez Aguilar Theater.

“It is a story for adults based on the memories of our youth”, emphasizes the writer. The story follows the members of a musical group, which was formed during their school days, and who decide to get together to venture into a song contest. Thus, these characters with different ways of being and thinking, whom life has taken on different paths, embark on this project that fills them with great enthusiasm.

“It is written to have a pleasant and fun, romantic and friendly time, where we will find songs from the 50s, 60s, 70s,” the writer advances. “At the end of the book there is a songbook similar to those of yesteryear, with all the melodies that make up the contest.”

Indeed, because of these musical references, it is a novel aimed at adults, especially people who lived and enjoyed the experiences that happened “about 60, 70 years ago.”

“This is my current stage. Although it is a short novel, I have given priority to the older ones, it is simple, easy to read. At our age, which is the best, we do not have to complicate things, we live from ‘the years gone by’, from memories. These should be chosen among the best, so we are creating a present full of tranquility and joy,” the author highlights.

But Margarita Barriga de Baquerizo also wants to dedicate the title to the youngest. So that they know “what the experience was like” in their youth, “that they become interested in past things that will not return, that made good people grow in the environment in which they developed, such as the strength of the values of friendship , affection and solidarity through the passage of time. And that motivates the reader to have dreams and pursue their dreams, despite age and difficulties.”

Last year the Ecuadorian writer debuted as a painter with the watercolor technique, so Contest (prohibited for people over 100 years old) has the honour of bringing her own illustrations. In addition to painting and children’s literature, Margarita Barriga’s name is linked to the creation of puppets for kindergartens. (AND)
