According to the Central Reserve Bank (BCR), this is the second consecutive increase so far in 2024.

The figures indicate that inflation levels have increased without pause since July 2021, when it reached 3.43 percent and did not stop until climbing in June 2022 to a value of 7.76 percentage points.

The increases are manifested in new challenges for the population’s economy, mainly reflected in the increase in the cost of the basic basket and high prices in services.

According to the BCR, the food and non-alcoholic beverage sector was the most affected, increasing from 2.34 percent in April to 2.71 in May, generating an increase of 0.37 percentage points.

Although inflation increased in general, two sectors reported a slowdown, meaning that prices grew at a slower rate.

The data indicate that accommodation, water, electricity and gas services fell from 0.60 percent to 0.44, while alcoholic beverages and tobacco fell from 2.26 percent to 1.16.

According to a survey by the University of El Salvador, food is the main concern of Salvadorans within all concerns about the economy and, for example, in the west of the country, it is the biggest expense for 70.74 percent of the residents. .
