With less than a week until the MET Gala, Considered the “Oscars of fashion”, there are still doubts surrounding the emblematic event that transcends the limits of the needle and thread industry, to become a cultural event of global relevance.
While the glitter and spectacle is the center of this extraordinary ceremony, the parade of stars is celebrated with the main purpose of raise funds for the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, thus supporting its mission to preserve and showcase fashion as an art form.

What is the MET Gala and what is its objective?
Specifically, the MET Gala is a charity dinner that kicks off a special fashion exhibition at the museum. More than just a galais an event that unites influential personalities from fashion, entertainment and culture to celebrate creativity in a sublime context.

The “sleeping beauties” of this 2024
This 2024, the Costume Institute’s new exhibition is titled “Sleeping Beauties: Fashion Awakening.” According to one of the organizers, Vogue, The sample will have approximately 250 rare items drawn from the permanent collection. The pieces, which cover more than 400 years of fashion history, will include designs from Schiaparelli, Dior, Givenchy and more. Some garments that are too fragile to be reworn, such as a Charles Frederick Worth ball gown from 1877, will also be displayed using video animation, light projection, AI, CGI and other forms of sensory stimulation.

“It’s basically an ode to nature.”said Andrew Bolton, chief curator of the Costume Institute and the main person responsible for this idea. “Nature as a metaphor for fashion, its fragility and transience,” noted the expert, because what we will see are many designs that directly allude to the beauty of flora and fauna: an example is the mention of butterflies, which we find both in Alexander McQueen’s spring 2011 and in the architectural Haute Couture that Charles James proposed in 1955.
What is the dress code?
The dress code for this year’s MET Gala 2024 is “The garden of time”. Inspired by JG Ballard’s short story of the same title, written in 1962, can be interpreted in countless ways. Still, we’re likely to see plenty of floral and botanical looks gracing the famous Met Gala red carpet. But also, the select stars that are part of the night could allude to the same exhibition, making use of archival garments from big brands or references to them.
When is the MET Gala 2024?
Officially, the MET Gala 2024 will take place on May 6, in New York, a date that respects the custom of holding the event on the first Monday in May, except for 2020 due to the pandemic.
