This 2024, the Costume Institute’s new exhibition is titled “Sleeping Beauties: Fashion Awakening.” According to one of the organizers, Vogue, The sample will have approximately 250 rare items drawn from the permanent collection. The pieces, which cover more than 400 years of fashion history, will include designs from Schiaparelli, Dior, Givenchy and more. Some garments that are too fragile to be reworn, such as a Charles Frederick Worth ball gown from 1877, will also be displayed using video animation, light projection, AI, CGI and other forms of sensory stimulation.

It’s basically an ode to nature.”said Andrew Bolton, chief curator of the Costume Institute and the main person responsible for this idea. “Nature as a metaphor for fashion, its fragility and transience,” noted the expert, because what we will see are many designs that directly allude to the beauty of flora and fauna: an example is the mention of butterflies, which we find both in Alexander McQueen’s spring 2011 and in the architectural Haute Couture that Charles James proposed in 1955.

What is the dress code?

The dress code for this year’s MET Gala 2024 is “The garden of time”. Inspired by JG Ballard’s short story of the same title, written in 1962, can be interpreted in countless ways. Still, we’re likely to see plenty of floral and botanical looks gracing the famous Met Gala red carpet. But also, the select stars that are part of the night could allude to the same exhibition, making use of archival garments from big brands or references to them.
