Director of DIAN answers curious question about VAT, Chayanne and bullfighting

Luis Carlos Reyes, the director of the National Tax and Customs Directorate (Dian), once again responded to the thoughts of some Internet users about taxation. The official, who has been nicknamed ‘Mr. Taxes’, talked about VAT, bullfights and even the singer Chayanne.

He did it through a video from his popular TikTok social network account, in which he is close to exceeding 370 thousand followers.

“Mr. Taxes, since the tax reform puts VAT on bullfighting, should Chayanne pay taxes in Colombia for the bullfighter’s song?“A user asked.

First of all, the economist referred to the interpreter of Bullfighter: “I don’t know if bullfighting is approved by Chayanne.”

Then, He made clear to the Internet user the taxation that applies to bullfighting and took the opportunity to talk about the prohibition project that is being considered in the Congress of the Republic.

“They do have VAT from the reform and, in addition, tomorrow (May 7) in the Chamber debate their total prohibition will be debated. So those who are interested in this, do not allow the representatives for whom they voted to give them shit with this issue,” he said.

Since when is there VAT on bullfighting?

The Tax Statute before 2022 excluded from sales tax or VAT “movie tickets, sporting and cultural events, including musicals and family recreation, and bull, horse and dog shows.”

However, With the tax reform of that year, the tax exemption was reduced and the new text removed bull shows to consider them as taxable from now on.that is, the tickets for these events have VAT of 19%.

The same 2022 reform imposed VAT on the marketing of domestic pets (cats, dogs, ferrets, rabbits, chinchillas, hamsters, guinea pigs, Gerbils and Mini-Pigs).

Currently, VAT does not apply to tickets for “entrance to movies, sporting events, cultural events, including musical events, and family recreation events.”

It is worth saying that bullfighting has not been prohibited in Colombia, despite several attempts by congressmen. For example, in April 2023 one of the projects promoted by Senator Andrea Padilla fell.

“When we stop defending these practices, then we can take care of what is important, which is to attend to the dignified life and opportunities of these citizens who, we simply say, live in the regions and in deep Colombia, as if they had to settle for any thing,” he noted at the time.

For the 2024 legislature, Senator Esmeralda Hernández has promoted another project with the aim of prohibiting them. The last debate that will have in Congress will be this May 7, as mentioned by the director of the Dian.

“It is time for animals to win and put an end to so much cruelty. We are going to achieve it!” said the senator in a social media message.
