Women took center stage in the music industry. According to Spotify data, among the most listened to Argentine artists currently are María Becerra, Nathy Peluso, Emilia, Tini, Nicki Nicole and Lali Espósito. Without going too far, María de los Ángeles Becerra (24), that girl who started as a YouTuber, ended up at the musical top and continues to be one of the young people with the greatest international projection. Kind, humble and charismatic, the “Nena de Argentina” tells us about her beginnings, her childhood, her fame and her love: she is engaged to the singer J Rei and she wants to marry him.

María has just released a new single called “Imán”. “It’s part of a new era for me. The vast majority of my songs revolve around pop and this song is funkier, it’s divine,” she says.

María – who is releasing a song, “Imán”, and also a new look – is an immense musical phenomenon. In June she has 15 dates in Spain and in September her world tour is coming, which includes the United States and Latin America. “It will be my first time giving my own shows in the United States. I specifically asked to do the tour like Selena did, because I love her with my life. “I wanted to live the experience she had doing an entire bus tour, from city to city, and living there,” she says.

–How did the daughter of a cardiologist and a nurse end up dedicating herself to music?

–The first time I fell madly in love with music was when I was 5 years old when I saw a live Whitney Houston show that my mother put on television. I stayed glued for about half an hour, listening to the songs, and it generated all the emotions in me together… Want to cry, happiness… My parents have their profession, but at the same time they are very artists. My mother was a theatrical makeup artist, she wanted and dreamed of being a classical dancer. My dad plays the guitar. So, there was always a lot of music at home.

–What advice from your parents do you always carry with you?

–There is something that is not in relation to music, but in relation to me as a woman. My mom once told my two sisters [también tiene un hermano] and some very strong words that marked me when I was little: “You have to be independent in your life, don’t leave work, don’t stop studying. Never depend on a man because that will clip your wings.” And today each of us is doing her own thing.

“Fame is a tool that I have to know what to use it for. But, I also know that it is something that can disappear tomorrow.”

–And what do your sisters (one is a lawyer, the other a model and influencer) tell you now that you are a global musical phenomenon?

–It’s still like they didn’t realize a lot of things. They are very calm, very humble. Suddenly they accompany me on a tour and see all the movement around me. We leave an airport, there is security to escort us and someone opens the car door for them, and for them it is a lot. They haven’t gotten used to that yet.

You just released a new single, “Imán”…

–This single is part of this new era for me. The vast majority of my songs revolve around pop and this song is funkier, it’s truly divine. I had the honor of going to Sweden to work with the entire Max Martin team. I learned a lot. My idea is to release the third album at the end of the year.

Although her father is a cardiologist and her mother is a nurse, María assures that they also have an artistic side and that there was always a lot of music in their house. “My mother was also a theatrical makeup artist, she wanted and dreamed of being a classical dancer. “My dad plays the guitar,” she tells us.

–You got engaged with a ring and everything…

–Yes, in fact, I have the ring on. It was last year in Santorini. This ring means: “I promise that I am going to marry you, that I am going to propose to you,” but I am waiting for him to ask me to marry him. [Se ríe].

–Does the idea of starting a family, having children, keep you awake at night?

-Yeah. Since I was a girl I dreamed of being a mother. I love the idea of starting a family. I’m very old school in that sense. For example, I respect open relationships and all that, but I wouldn’t have it.

“I went on stage for the first time when I was 9 years old, in one of my first singing shows. But I remember one time when I was 12 years old, I even remember what I was wearing, how I had my hair, everything! It was in a bar in Quilmes, my city, and there were twenty people, they were family members who came to see us at our singing show. It was an incredible feeling,” María recalls.Jesus Lamb

Together with her boyfriend, the singer J Rei, with whom she got engaged last year in Santorini. “For me he is the perfect man, he is so attentive, such a gentleman… He is the love of my life and he also feels the same way,” she says about her boyfriend.

–That also has to do with what you saw at home, your parents are still together…

-Yes together. My parents do everything together. They are very united and that is what I aspire to as well. I want to be with the same person until I am old.

–You are super in love…

-Yeah. He is the love of my life and he feels the same way too. I swear, it’s strong. For me, he is the perfect man, he is so attentive, such a gentleman that that is also why I say that I am kind of old school because, well, I like those things and he is like that.

“I feel super happy. Now I have a show in Italy and we sold a lot of tickets the first three days and I was like, “Do they know me in Italy?” It’s incredible. I’m so grateful to my country because it has always given a lot of importance to music, to art. And that’s why so many artists come out of Argentina. That seems tremendous to me,” she says.

–Tell us about your tour plans for this year.

–In Spain there are like 12 or 15 shows. I’m going to revisit places I’ve already visited: Madrid, Barcelona, Granada, Malaga. And there are other places that I have never been to and that I will go for the first time. We are also going to do a world tour in September and we are going to visit quite a few countries.

“Since I was little I dreamed of being a mother. I love the idea of starting a family,” admits the artist. Jesus Lamb

–What excites you most about traveling the world?

–That we are also going to be in many Latin American countries: Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, which I never went to. I am also very happy to go to Mexico, the United States. The truth is that I am very eager for that experience, happy for the opportunity that music gives me, that life gives me to be able to live from what I love and to know so many cultures and that so many people listen to me on another side of the world.
