Have a new album again system of a Downand the guarantee of having the band active that this would entail, is a dream that the followers of the Armenian-American group have had for almost twenty years, which have passed since they saw the light in a now surprisingly distant 2005 ‘Mezmerize’ and ‘Hypnotize’. Serj Tankian, its vocalist, who recently released a song that was composed for SOAD under his name, “AF Day”, points out what would be necessary for that dream to come true.
During an interview for The Jesea Lee Show in which the main topic was the memoir published by Tankian, “Down With The System”the vocalist was asked the direct question of what would be necessary to have that new album, to which he had no doubts: “Equal approach to everything within the band. In other words, more equality in terms of the origin of the music, in terms of the distribution of everything, including the editing, in terms of the ideas, in terms of sharing the vision… That kind of things”.
Tankian remembers that he posed some ideas to his colleagues in the past for the future of System of a Down and that this approach did not work: “It’s in the book. We jokingly called it a ‘manifesto’ because I wrote points that, years ago, when I had some new songs that I thought would be amazing for System, and that I played to the guys. I said, ‘Guys, I have an idea about a vision, a different way forward that I think would be very beneficial for the band.” And I presented it. We call it a manifesto in the book, almost half-jokingly, but bringing a manifesto to rock musicians is. .. (laughs) I guess it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. But I was trying to instill the same kind of egalitarian principles that I love as an activist into everything I do. And it didn’t work at the time, but maybe it will someday. . We’ll see”.
These words join those recently offered by the vocalist about the moment of crisis in which he came to propose that System of a Down will look for a new singer to move on without him.
