The virtuoso guitarist Marty Friedman He left a deep mark with his work on the six strings of Megadethsharing this task with his leader, Dave Mustainein albums as iconic as ‘Rust In Peace’, ‘Countdown To Extinction’ either ‘Youthanasia’. But the lyrics are another story, and Mustaine went so far as to tell Friedman that ““You should still focus on playing the guitar” after he presented him with some texts.

As the guitarist has said, He rejoined the band last year during their last visit to Japan., where he has been living for two decades, it was the leader of Megadeth himself who suggested that he write some lyrics for the band’s songs. The interview given by Marty Friedman to “The Rock Is George Podcast” has refreshed this memory, which is activated by talking about two new songs from his album ‘Drama’which break their instrumental line with lyrics performed by Chris Brooks in “Dead of Winter” and Steven Baquero Vargas in “2 Rebels”.

“When I started working on the music for “Dead of Winter,” Chris was the first one I thought of.”Friedman begins to tell. “He’s hit the nail on the head in a lot of ways. His vocals are fantastic, but the lyrics really mean something to a lot of people, and that’s something I’m very, very poor at.”

At that moment Mustaine enters the game: “I couldn’t write a lyric for my life. It’s really funny, you know, I’ve never, ever had the talent to write a lyric. When I was in Megadeth, in the early years, Dave Mustaine came and me. He said, “Dude, you should try writing some lyrics for us. Join the party with some lyrics.’ And I was like, ‘Wow, that was really nice of him to ask me to do that.’ I came in with some lyrics and he said, ‘You might as well focus on playing guitar.’ And that’s what I did. It’s something completely foreign to me. I’ve never had that chromosome, so to speak.”

Marty closes this section alluding to how in Japan they soak up music regardless of the language in which the lyrics of the songs are: “One fantastic thing about the Japanese, something I wish other countries would adapt, is that they listen to music regardless of the language. They listen to music from all cultures, from all countries, even if they don’t know the language. I can’t imagine growing up in the United States and listening to a song in Italian and it becomes something widely listened to… But in Japan, it is a very musical culture, so there is a great appetite for all kinds of music. But I think the key is that it has to be based on melody.

Megadeth will download their thrash metal again in our country this summer, with the Resurrection Fest poster wearing the logo of those of Dave Mustaine in its upper area, next to Bruce Dickinson, Corey Taylor, Alice Cooper, Bring Me The Horizon, Avenged Sevenfold, Babymetal or Machine Head. Tickets for the festival to be held on June 26 to 29 in their traditional Viveiro location are for sale in the Resurrection Fest official website.
