There are many iconic films based on their characters. Some have characters so well written and performed that they stand out from everything else.

When this happens, it is impossible to think that someone else could have given them life. Here is a list of some of the lesser-known or more questionable “rejections” of Hollywood stars with extremely iconic characters.

1- Gary Oldman as Edward Scissorhands

Edward Scissorhands is one of Tim Burton’s most popular films. Released in 1990, it remains a classic in the director’s filmography. The film has several memorable elements such as the production design and music, as well as the cast led by Johnny Depp, who plays the character of Edward.

However, Burton had initially considered Gary Oldman for the role. Oldman, known for roles in films such as Dracula and The Dark Knight, turned down the role after reading the script; he simply didn’t understand the concept. Scissorhands and the castle in the suburbs failed to convince him. Years later, Oldman mentioned in an interview that upon seeing the first scene of the film, he understood everything.

2- Rachel McAdams

After the success of Mean Girls and The Diary of a Passion in 2004, Rachel McAdams became one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood. At that time, she was offered several roles, but she turned them down because she decided to take a break from acting and move to Canada between 2006 and 2008.

At that time, McAdams passed up the role of Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada, which was eventually played by Anne Hathaway. He also turned down playing Julia Meade in Mission: Impossible III, a role that would later be played by Michelle Monaghan. Another character he passed up was Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale, played by Eva Green. Additionally, he turned down the role of Pepper Potts in Iron Man, which ended up being played by Gwyneth Paltrow. Director David Frankel urged McAdams to accept the role of Andy three times, but was unsuccessful.

3- Viggo Mortensen and Wolverine

Viggo Mortensen, known worldwide for his role as Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, could have given life to another character who was Wolverine in the X-Men saga. Mortensen attended a meeting with director Bryan Singer, accompanied by his son, who was a big fan of the comics. However, they did not reach an agreement regarding the script and Mortensen decided not to participate in the project. Eventually, Hugh Jackman took on the role, becoming one of the most iconic characters in the comic book film industry.
