Farmaindustria has completed the celebration of its 60th anniversary with the focus on the value of biomedical research in society.

During the gala, which brought together researchers, political representatives, from the field of patients, the health world and pharmaceutical companies at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, the general director of Farmaindustria, Juan Yermodeclared that they have proposed to the administrations an “ambitious but realistic” country project: to turn Spain into “one of the few hubs of biomedical innovation, that we are producers of biological medicines and advanced therapies, in addition to chemically synthesized medicines and APIs.” And he recalled that they are working together with the Government on the Strategic Plan for the Pharmaceutical Industry that will allow us to extract all the potential of the sector.

For his part, the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Universities, Juan Cruz Cigudosahighlighted that Spain is “a country that looks at biomedical innovation as an engine of economic and social development” and added that “we have a country challenge, the magic word is collaboration.”

He president of Farmaindustria, Jesús Poncealso insisted that “it is a pride to have a purpose as stimulating as that of promoting research, innovation and the production of medicines to improve people’s lives. Our commitment is to continue doing so with the excellence that has always characterized us, with the good practices that we promote in our daily life and our strong social commitment to contribute to a better society.

Innovation

For its part, the Minister of Economy and Employment of the Community of Madrid, Rocío Alberthighlighted the commitment of the Community of Madrid to the pharmaceutical sector and praised the work of Farmaindustria, “a very innovative institution, which favors the commitment to R&D&I and balanced growth in the market.”

The event included a conference of Carola García de Vinuesa, Deputy Director of Research at The Francis Crick Institute and member of the Royal Society of London, the oldest scientific institution in the world. García de Vinuesa recounted several cases in which genetic diagnosis has changed people’s lives and how public-private collaboration is vital to exploit its potential. “It is essential that the pharmaceutical industry, scientists, doctors, the legal system and governments work together to address them and stand firmly for the well-being, equity and justice of all people, everywhere,” he said.

Farmaindustria Young Researchers 60th Anniversary Award

The winner of the 60th Anniversary Farmaindustria Young Researchers Award, Cristina Mayor-Ruizthanked Farmaindustria for supporting young scientists dedicated to basic and translational research through the award and also wanted to remember “all the researchers who in Spain in each of their fields try to commit to science.”
