The flags of 26 nations were ceremoniously unfurled at the Paragon military base in Barbados, marking the official start of Tradewinds 24 on May 4.

Fluttering in the breeze, the pavilions created a vibrant presentation of diversity and unity. From the rich hues representing Caribbean nations to the bold Stars and Stripes of the United States to the varied colors of Europe, each flag symbolized the partner nations’ commitment to collaboration and multilateral relationships.

“As we bring together nations of different backgrounds and experiences, we are united by the common goal of enhancing our capabilities, strengthening our partnerships and fostering cooperation between our forces,” said Barbados Defense Forces Commander Mark Peterson, co-leader of the exercise.

Tradewinds 24, which takes place May 4-16, is part of the Joint Staff-Large Scale Global Exercise 2024 (LSGE 24). This multinational exercise symbolizes the collective determination of nations to improve interoperability, foster collaboration and strengthen capabilities in the face of changing security challenges.

As the world faces a range of complex threats, exercises like Tradewinds serve as pillars of strength, readiness and resilience for participating forces.

“Important events are taking place around the world,” said Texas Army National Guard Brigadier General Monie Ulis, vice commanding general of U.S. Army South. “Everything that will be trained here is based on human rights, the rule of law and the professionalization of partner armies. In this way our forces are adaptable, trained and prepared to respond to cross-border challenges.”

More than 1,200 members of the armed forces from more than 26 countries stood side by side, laying the foundation for a remarkable display of unity and collaboration.

“Let us not take for granted the level of planning necessary to bring together more than 20 like-minded democratic countries and regional organizations to achieve a common goal,” said Bda. Gen. Ulysses. “This exemplified a shared commitment to strengthen our alliances and stand united under shared responsibilities as defenders of common values.”

Tradewinds is an initiative that dates back to 1986. This is the third time Barbados has hosted the exercise. The island country constantly demonstrates its ability to provide a beneficial environment for productive dialogue and collaboration between participating nations.

Commodore Errington Shurland, Chief of Staff of the Barbados Defense Forces, expressed his excitement at the return of the event to Barbados for the fourth time.

“We consider it a privilege to welcome our partners to our shores as we join the United States Southern Command as co-hosts of this edition of Tradewinds,” he stated. “This year’s exercise focuses on foreign military interaction; maritime operations; and training on the ground, to support the Southern Command campaign plan.”

At the end of the ceremony, the troops left full of pride and excitement for the days ahead. With Tradewinds 24 now underway, the stage is set for a period of effective exchange and collaboration, as partner nations embark on a shared journey towards prosperity and progress.

“Let us approach this exercise with determination, teamwork and a spirit of mutual respect,” Commander Peterson concluded. “Let’s take the opportunity to improve our capabilities, make new friendships and strengthen our ties as allies and partners!”
