In the municipality of San Carlos they are dismayed by the death of Mariody Murillo Murillo, a woman well known and loved by the community, as she served as secretary of the parish of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores.

Mariody arrived in Medellín from San Carlos a little over a week ago to undergo cosmetic surgery. The procedure was carried out in a rented office at the León XIII clinic by a private doctor who performed liposuction surgery last June 18. The surgery went well and the 44-year-old woman was sent post-operatively to a relative’s home.

However, during the first check-up on June 21, Mariody was diagnosed with possible anemia, so she was sent back to her relative’s home, since traveling to San Carlos in that state could be risky.

Everything passed without incident until last Tuesday, June 25, when the woman had to be rushed to the Clínica de las Américas at 5 a.m. due to decompensation. However, despite her efforts to revive her, Mariody fought for his life, but finally at 6:16 am he died.

While waiting for the forensic results to reveal the causes of her death, it was learned that Mariody had been diagnosed four years ago with hypertension and since that time had been taking medication to control the disease.

The parish expressed its sadness at the loss of its companion and the Diocese of Sonsón Rionegro expressed its condolences for the death of Murillo, who had been in charge of the parish office for 20 years.

This is the fourth known death due to cosmetic procedures in Medellin this year alone. On February 25, Erica Zapata, a 50-year-old woman, died 10 days after undergoing a tummy tuck and liposuction. In the early hours of February 25, she began to experience cramps in her left leg and dizziness. She then began to have episodes of convulsions, so she was transferred to the Las Vegas clinic, where she arrived without vital signs.

And in early April there was another death. A 57-year-old woman arrived at an aesthetic center in the Laureles neighborhood to have the second session of a treatment against varicose veins called sclerotherapy. In the first session everything had gone well, but unexpectedly, while the procedure was being performed, the woman decompensated until she fainted, which is why, according to the aesthetic center, the woman had to undergo resuscitation, but it was not possible. possible to save his life.

With each reported case, the departmental health authorities indicate that they will intensify inspections and controls to avoid procedures outside the rules, such as operating rooms without authorized protocols and surgeons without the proper certifications. However, the number of procedures performed in Medellín makes these controls difficult.

For two years now, so-called cosmetic tourism has been known, in which supposedly unscrupulous agencies sell packages to foreigners that include, in addition to surgeries, lodging and even entertainment activities, but in reality it hides an illegal practice in which surgeries are performed in hotels and lodgings clandestinely and without any type of medical guarantee.
