Cinema Jove pays tribute to the creator of the ‘Dragon Ball’ saga, Akira Toriyama, in the cycle ‘The anime gods’, dedicated to Japanese animation, starting June 22 at the Filmoteca.

This section of the contest includes in its programming this year two titles based on characters and plots originally created by the influential Japanese cartoonist, who died last March at the age of 68.

On the one hand, ‘Dragon Ball Z: The Resurrection of F’, the nineteenth film in one of the most influential sagas in the history of the genre, will be screened; and, on the other, ‘Sand Land’, directed by Toshihisa Yokoshima and Hiroshi Koujina and also based on original stories by Toriyama.

The director of Cinema Jove, Carlos Madridhas highlighted that Toriyama “has been responsible for countless afternoons of entertainment for those of us who were children in the nineties.”

“His characters Drac’s Ball and Dr. Slump, With whom, in addition, many children learned Valencian, they dazzled us with their adventures, and their grotesque and transgressive humor. That is why at Cinema Jove we dedicate this small tribute to him by projecting his characters on the big screen, initially conceived in a manga and later conceived only for the small screen,” he stated.

Cycle about anime

The series will start on June 22 at the Filmoteca with Yoshimi Itazu’s directorial debut, ‘The Concierge’. The newcomer is known for his detailed and stylized style in animation and his ability to tell moving stories and provide depth to the characters in proposals such as ‘Paprika’ (Satoshi Kon, 2006) and ‘Miss Hokusai’ (Keiichi Hara, 2015), details the organization in a statement.

‘The Concierge’ is based on a manga by Tsuchika Nishimura and stars a young woman named Akino who starts working as a janitor at the luxurious North Pole Department Store.

This establishment has the peculiarity that the majority of its clients are animals, each of which represents human personalities and characteristics. Through Akino’s interaction with them, the film addresses themes such as acceptance, understanding and connection between individuals from different backgrounds.

Reunion with Goku

The festival will host the screening of ‘Dragon Ball Z: The Resurrection of F’ on June 24. Released in 2015 and directed by Tadayoshi Yamamuro, it is the sequel to ‘The Battle of the Gods’ and the nineteenth film in the saga. ‘Dragon Ball’. Unlike other titles in the saga, this one was supervised by Akira Toriyama himself.

The action begins at a time of world peace, after Beerus, the god of destruction, decided not to destroy the Earth. However, Sorbet and Tagoma, two of the surviving members of Frieza’s force, return in search of the dragon balls.

The combination of fantasy, fast-paced action and martial arts of the ‘Dragon Ball’ universe continues to captivate youth, generation after generation. Without a doubt, the travels and adventures of Goku, the Saiyan warrior created by Akira Toriyama in 1984 and transferred from manga to anime in the ninetieshave left a gigantic trail of influences on contemporary culture.

The premiere of “Dragon Ball Z: The Resurrection of F” was a box office success both in Japan and internationally, helping to revitalize interest in the saga and paving the way for the continuity and expansion of “Dragon Ball Super.”

End of cycle

The cycle ‘The Gods of Anime’ will conclude on June 29 with ‘Sand Land’, a film based on the manga of the same name also created by Akira Toriyama. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where water is extremely scarce and controlled by a greedy king.

The protagonist is Beelzebub, the prince of demons, who forms an alliance with a human sheriff named Rao and his demon assistant Thief. Together, they set out on a quest to find a hidden water source, known as the Ghost Lake.

As they continue their journey in this desolate wasteland, the characters face various challenges and discover secrets about the world’s past and the true nature of waterbending. The plot combines elements of action, adventure and fantasy, with touches of Toriyama’s characteristic humor.
