Eduardo Yanez caused a riot on Monday night during the red carpet of the Hispanic Greatness Awards, after attacking the reporter Paty Cuevas. In various videos that circulated on the social network X, the tense moment was recorded. Cuevas, collaborator of the controversial program Shocked, questioned him if he had converted to Christianity, after being seen in a church in Mexico City. The question bothered the actor, who in a second meeting broke the selfie stick from the journalist and snatched her cell phone.
The action led to a chase in which Paty Cuevas and reporters from other media were injured by security guards, who were trying to repel the press so that Eduardo Yáñez could enter the premises.
Cuevas gave his first impressions minutes after the incident. He maintained that Yáñez’s reaction was irrational, since his questions were not disrespectful, as the actor stated in a parallel interview, in which she accused the journalist of being “aggressive” towards him.
Two days after the incident, a video was leaked on X justifying the questions asked by Paty Cuevas. The account @TuTíaSandra shared a short video that records the actor in a church in the Polanco neighborhood, “accepting Christ in his heart.”
At the beginning, a young pastor addresses the community and asks if there are people who come for the first time because they decided to house Christ in them. Although the camera focuses on him, he asks his brothers to raise their hands and a celebration is heard. The bustle was because among the audience the figure of Eduardo Yáñez stands out, who attended mass with Bible in hand.
Another member of the community welcomes the actor and explains that he will give him a Bible where he will write a verse and the following phrase: “If you read the Bible you will find peace.” The video, unpublished until Tuesday night, has generated a stir on X, where hundreds of users have criticized the actor for attacking the reporter and minimizing her actions.
In an interview with the journalist Maxine WoodsideEduardo Yáñez blamed Paty Cuevas for the mess at the Hispanic Grandeza awards and denied having snatched her cell phone, as she claimed.
“They grabbed me from outside (the event) and that’s when the whole thing started. That’s when the phone thing happened, I picked up the phone, but she had it on my back. I didn’t take it to attack her, but to feel what was on her back, that’s how it was and I stayed with it in my hand,” said Yáñez.
Eduardo Yáñez accused Paty Cuevas of systematic attacks and, although he regretted the incident, he distanced himself from it: “It is a shame that we have come to this and that has to do with the sum of insistence that comes from her, that whenever she interviews me She asks me very aggressive questions, not only about me, but about my colleagues, where she wants me to speak badly about my colleagues or speak badly of my colleagues.”
Aside from Eduardo Yáñez’s statements, Paty Cuevas confirmed that she will file a complaint for robbery and assault, as she suffered serious injuries.
