More than boredom: “ennui”, the little-known emotion that Inside Out 2 presented | TV and Show

An elegant and lethargic character was introduced in the newly released Inside Out 2, sequel to the Disney Pixar film that is inserted into the functioning of the mind. Is about Ennuian emotion that presents itself as “boredom,” but it is much more than that.

Child and adolescent psychologist at Clínica Santa María, Jennifer Conejero, explained to BioBioChile that “ennui is a French concept that refers to the deep boredom that can appear in adolescence, characterized by lack of energy, there may be a feeling of emptiness, demotivation and the perception that time passes more slowly.”

“You can see it in teenagers and in the same emotion of the movie, when they are on their cell phone, not even having a good time, but with a general reluctance,” said the professional.

That is, in Spanish it could be translated as “boredom”, “apathy” or “ennui”, but none of the three completely addresses this concept.

“Ennui” is not a bad emotion in itself

Conejero pointed out to BioBioChile that when “ennui” takes over us, we mainly feel “demotivation”.

He describes it as a “feeling of not having the desire to do even activities that may be rewarding to others. It is associated with procrastination behaviors, where I may have chosen an activity – such as studying – but in the end, I still don’t want to do it.”

Of course, he emphasizes that like all emotions, “it is not bad in itself, it should be an alert about what is happening to us, that we do not feel comfortable with our activities.”

“The concept has become relevant for some time now, apparently, due to the constant demand to have fun, video games and social networks promote doing entertaining things all the time, relegating the importance of encountering boredom, which can be a point starting point for creativity and self-knowledge.”

On the other hand, the professional pointed out that the film Intensely 2 accurately reflects human emotions.

“The film had advisors to create these emotions, choosing first the basic ones and then those that seemed most important in adolescence. Of course, you have to understand that this is a film for children, therefore, the emotions are characterized in a simple way so that they are easy to identify and relate to,” he expressed.

“Human emotions are becoming more complex due to the experiences we have lived and the interpretation we give to those sensations that can often be mixed (such as nostalgia),” he added.
