This Wednesday, the Chamber of Deputies gave half sanction to the bill promoted by Josefina Canale –deputy fulfilled mandate– for which Smoking is prohibited in the rooms, balconies, patios or terraces of the Casinos located in the territory of the province.

Through provincial law 7790 Law No. 5374 was modified establishing the prohibition of smoking in any closed space with public access, both in the public and private spheres of the province of Mendoza. However, it also provides exceptions to the latter in relation to game rooms dependent on the Provincial Institute of Games and Casinos, and private game rooms and casinos.

In this sense, this initiative promotes “the prohibition of consuming tobacco in closed spaces”extending to “all the casinos in the province”.

“The damage caused by tobacco consumption to health and exposure to smoke is scientifically proven, as well as the health impact on communities,” highlights the text, which also adds that “for casino workers it means an enormous risk to their health, since exposure to tobacco smoke increases the risk of lung cancer for non-smokers, between 20% and 30%, and the risk of heart disease by approximately the same percentage.. Thus, “The aim is to protect individuals from involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke”adds the modification to the law.

This project is framed within three objectives: on the one hand, linked to health and sustainable development, “whose purpose is to ensure healthy living and promote well-being for all at all ages”; decent work “which tends to create decent jobs for all and improve living standards”and sustainable cities and communities, “which proposes making cities more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”.

During on-site treatment, Franco Ambrosini (UCR)indicated that this bill “It is focused on a specific problem that is exposure to cigarette smoke in rooms, balconies, patios and terraces of our casinos and its purpose is to prohibit the act of smoking in any of the areas of the casinos in the province”. “It arises not only from our responsibility to protect the health of citizens but also so that each individual can enjoy a healthy and smoke-free environment.”he said, and then highlighted “the studies and opinions of the World Health Organization regarding smoking and passive smoking. “The number of deaths that occur each year is enormous.”.

“This project is preventive and promotes health, because not only the employees who work in the casinos, but also the visitors and those who pass through the casino rooms, are exposed to smoke from smokers and it is essential to ensure that these spaces are insurance. It is another kick in the province, which moves towards a healthier and more responsible province”he concluded.
