They do not manage the reception of minors, except that, as happened with the six migrants who arrived last October, once here, they stated that they had not reached the age of majority. There could have been an affiliation error when registering your data. And in the end, the forensic examination of three of them has confirmed that they are 18 years old and the other three are still waiting for the result of an oseometric test at Movimiento por la Paz, an NGO that, under a humanitarian aid program that maintain with the Ministry, welcomes and accompanies adult migrants.

– How do young migrants arrive in our region?

– Almost everyone wants to study, prepare, they want to get a job. At first they come quite disoriented, but they have all told us that they would like to join, in addition they are all followers of the Spanish League and have their idols, but their interest in studying is striking.

– What is the main reason that leads them to leave their countries?

– They arrive for various reasons, but the last contingent arrived from Senegal last September and they were fleeing from the police because there were riot police and persecution, it was a university demonstration. They said that their rights were being violated and that there was very strong violence towards them, even with shots fired by the police due to the political situation that is being experienced there. In other cases they leave because they have a situation of uprooting and extreme poverty and some report that their family has had to stop their agricultural production and they have had to emigrate to send them financial aid, but basically to have a better life and look for work.

– You get it?

– It is very complicated because they leave without any information, some say that if they had known the circumstances in which they were in Spain they would not have left. The absence of information is very notable.

– What is the job search like?

– Most of them do not bring documentation, at most a passport, and some don’t even have that. Then they are forced to work clandestinely, to work with what they can and in a situation of semi-slavery. There are people who, although they do not have documentation, look for paid jobs and find honest entrepreneurs, but also situations of semi-slavery.

– Also in La Rioja?

– In La Rioja, most of the people we have cared for leave Spain. There is a minimum percentage that decides to stay because part of our job is to place them in society, culture and territory, we inform them of their rights and duties and they are given precise information about their documentary situation through a lawyer. It is true that some people decide to return to their country, they are the least, but there are others who decide to leave not only La Rioja, but also Spain and another smaller percentage decides to look for contacts in the area of Almería, Murcia.

– What help do you provide them in Movement for Peace?

– The program we develop allows us to offer them a very temporary welcome, for a maximum of three months. We can care for them almost entirely, be with them and offer them accommodation, basic maintenance and health care. We provide a series of resources and our job consists of analyzing each case. In this individual analysis we can detect people who are applicants for international protection; in that case, we immediately inform the immigration brigade, and they are referred to the Red Cross. In the rest of the cases, our mission is to analyze their health and to what extent we can request some type of documentation from their embassies so that they can be identified.
