Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, stressed this Wednesday the need for the commitment of developed nations for international collaboration and the transfer of technologies and resources to developing countries in disaster management function.
In a message at the opening of the Sixth International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, the Cuban president highlighted that this support is required so that developing States can face the scientific and technological gap, and environmental degradation.
He assured that Cuba’s decision to join the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) is an example of the priority that the island gives to the important issue.
We hope to contribute to mutual learning, he highlighted.
Díaz-Canel added that disaster risk management requires the participation of all sectors of society with the leadership of government authorities to coordinate national strategies.
He explained that the Cuban experience demonstrates what can be achieved in this sense, in the protection of populations and their property.
Even when few resources are available and despite the cruel and illegal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed against the Cuban people for more than 60 years, he emphasized.
The Cuban head of state pointed out that in the Caribbean nation the institutional frameworks, early warning systems, and protection, response and recovery measures against disaster risks were updated in compliance with the Sendai framework.
The results achieved have been made available to several developing countries, as part of the cooperation that Cuba offers, he stated.
He also recognized India’s role as co-chair of the Coalition, which he considered key to increasing the resilience of infrastructure systems.
The Cuban president said that the aforementioned association is also essential for the exchange of good practices and the strengthening of the national response capacity to disasters and climate changes.
Finally, he reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to continue working, together with the rest of the coalition members, to increase international cooperation in this sphere, for the benefit of the people.
