Governor of Cienfuegos falls due to “errors” in management – DW – 04/25/2024

The governor of the central Cuban province of Cienfuegos, Alexandre Corona, resigned from his position after “acknowledging errors” committed during his four years in office, official media reported this Wednesday (04/24/2024).

His departure adds to the unusual number of changes of political figures in Cuba, both at the regional level within the Communist Party (PCC, the only legal one) and in various ministries in the country.

Corona’s resignation, in compliance with legal procedures, was accepted by the Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, who made the dismissal effective, explained the local newspaper September 5 in a note of just two paragraphs where the aforementioned are not detailed. mistakes”.

According to this publication, the position will be temporarily assumed by Yolexis Rodríguez, who until now served as provincial vice-governor, “until the election of a new governor is carried out.”

The movement is registered a week before the municipal assemblies of the provinces of Santiago de Cuba (east), Villa Clara (center) and Matanzas (west) elect their new governor in an early vote.

A year ago, all governors were voted in for a five-year term, but for various reasons these provinces must seek replacements in advance.

In these votes, the delegates choose the governor’s proposal made by the president of the country and so far there have only been majority ratifications.

More dismissals

Thus the so-called “cadre movements” accumulate on the island. Just last week, two first provincial secretaries of the PCC were fired in the provinces of Las Tunas (northeast) and Holguín (east).

With these two, seven dismissals of the party’s first provincial secretaries have already been recorded so far this year, out of a total of 15 throughout the country.

In February, on the other hand, three ministers were removed, one of them – the former head of Economy and former deputy prime minister Alejandro Gil – is under criminal investigation for an alleged crime of corruption, as announced a month later.

Likewise, in recent weeks the president of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP), a union organization within the orbit of the PCC, was also replaced.
