Pinar del Río, Cuba. – The Vice President of the Republic, Salvador Valdés Mesa, urged today in Pinar del Río to increase rice production, an essential food on the Cuban table and which requires the importation of large amounts each year to satisfy its demand.
He urged to promote the movement of the so-called popular rice in the western province, taking into account the availability of areas, machinery and infrastructure that cannot be lost and must be used.

Ariel García Pérez, director of the entity, explained that some 3,405 hectares were planted in the cold season, for 97 percent of the fulfillment of the plan; a part of which is already harvested.

During his tour of the Pinar del Río municipality of Los Palacios, the Vice President of Cuba, Salvador Valdés Mesa, learned that most of the rice planting falls on the cooperative and peasant sector, with more than 2 thousand producers.

He was also interested in soil preparation and cycles, as well as in the development of livestock in the Los Palacios Agroindustrial Grain Company and in the guarantee of water and pasture.
