Milko Cepeda presented advances in his studies of available lexicon.

On April 18 and 19, the academic from the School of Journalism of the Universidad Católica del Norte (UCN), Dr. Milko Cepeda, participated in the II Psycholinguistics Colloquium “Lexico: acquisition, processing and learning”, organized by the Department of Humanities and Art at the University of Concepción (UdeC).

The meeting brought together researchers and experts in the field of psycholinguistics at the national level, among whom professionals with important advances in the development of applications that allow evaluating the different levels of language, in addition to measuring the ranges of reading comprehension, stand out.

“They called me in February of this year, since the topics they would address in the Colloquium were related in terms of processing and how the lexicon is studied at the level of psycholinguistics and since my data has been published even in Spain, they ask me if I was interested in attending, which undoubtedly helped me realize that what I do and what I am studying has a huge presence today”said Milko Cepeda, doctor in linguistics.

PRESENTATION

Under the name “Contributions of lexical availability in the educational field and teacher training”, the researcher presented his findings from a decade of work, a time in which his studies have allowed him to construct catalogs of words in different populations of students, from kindergarten to eighth grade, which can serve as a starting point in the design of pedagogical strategies in the reading comprehension and writing processes.

As a way to link his research with his work as a Journalism academic, he noted that “The specific lexicon can serve to provide evidence for the acquisition and the relationship with the graduation profiles of the degree. For example, journalists who enter their training process are going to acquire a vocabulary that is specific to the career and that they must take into account when practicing.”.

Finally, Cepeda catalogs his participation as a tremendously valuable opportunity, “a unique opportunity to interact with colleagues who do very interesting things at the language level. It was a totally enriching experience”.
