With the delivery of your March newsletter, some conclusions can be drawn about how summer 2024 was.

This Thursday, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) delivered its monthly bulletin for the month of March 2024, with which an answer to an important question for the regional economy can already be outlined: how was the summer?

It is worth remembering that the monthly INE survey takes the formal sector as a source and is a tool for a random approximation to the current moment in which tourism is experiencing in the region.

That said, the main figure provided by this study is the 13.3% drop in overnight stays compared to the same date last year.

Although the month of January was the month that recorded the largest drop compared to 2023 (16.9%), the downward trend was also reinforced, although more gently, during the months of February and March, both with falls. of 11%.

The accumulated variation in the year in passenger arrivals, meanwhile, fell by 10.2%.

Other items in which contractions were recorded were the room occupancy rate and the income per available room.

On the other hand, within the framework of summer 2024, February was the only one that registered a greater arrival of visitors than the same month in 2023, with a surplus of 1.9%.

Summer started late and ended early

South Daily Group He consulted Luis Braña, President of the Futrono Chamber of Tourism, on this issue to find out if they are consistent with the reality of the group of tourism entrepreneurs that he represents.

“In February we had 90% occupancy and in some cases up to 100%. The problem was January, because the occupations started here on the 12th or 13th. We left a fortnight late. This year we believe that this failed due to uncertainty and the country’s economic situation,” explains Braña.

The main phenomenon, according to their perception, occurred in a contraction of the summer season, both from the beginning in January, and in the anticipation of its end at the beginning of March.

“That summer ended on February 29. The first week of March it was all over. The truth is that these months (March and April) have been lapidary,” adds the president of the Futrono Chamber of Tourism.

Finally, Braña called on the authorities to take note of the delicate situation experienced by business owners in sectors far from the regional capital and who live almost exclusively from tourism.
