Rueda closes visit to Argentina with meeting with the Milei Government and the fishing sector

Buenos Aires, May 4 (EFE).- The president of the Government of Galicia, Alfonso Rueda, closed his four-day visit to Argentina this Saturday with a meeting with the Executive of President Javier Milei and with representatives of the Galician fishing companies installed in the South American country, official sources reported.

The head of the Galician regional government has been in Argentina since May 1, on his first international trip after being inaugurated in April, after winning the elections on February 18, a visit with a marked economic profile.

In statements released by the Galician Xunta, Rueda confirmed his meeting with the Undersecretary of Fisheries, Juan Antonio López Cazorla, responsible for that sector in the Argentine Executive, who “transmitted tranquility regarding the future of (Galician) companies and demonstrated his awareness of how important it is that they are here and can continue to prosper.

Galician fishing companies have a strong presence in Argentina, where they have 80 boats in the South Atlantic and employ 5,000 people, of which 2,000 work at sea.

“I think that the fundamental thing in any business activity, and much more here in Argentina with respect to an activity as important as fishing, is to be certain that the rules of the game are not going to be changed, that they will be able to continue competing until now and if they are the best, as I think they are, let them continue doing well,” he noted.

The president of the Xunta recognized that “the uncertainties that existed at the beginning of the year” about possible legal changes for companies located in Argentina “are not going to finally occur and, therefore, this stability that they demand will be maintained.”

The politician of the Popular Party (PP, center-right) recalled the conversations held during his visits to the Patagonian provinces of Chubut and Santa Cruz (southern Argentina) with the local authorities, who, as he noted, were interested in the companies “being settle even more, increasing the workload and even ensuring that the transformative process is also carried out here”, as well as improving the qualifications of native workers.

“Logically in competition we have to continue being the best, but what I verified these days is that, without a doubt, the companies that are here do an excellent job and are in perfect conditions to compete on an equal basis with anyone,” he said.

The president of the Xunta also met this Saturday with the mayor of Buenos Aires, Jorge Macri -cousin of former president Mauricio Macri (2015-2019)-, at the residence of the Spanish Embassy in Buenos Aires.

According to Rueda himself published on his social networks, where he shared a photo with the politician from the Republican Proposal party (Pro, center-right), “strengthening ties with Argentina, the country that welcomes the most Galicians, is a priority.”

The leader of the Galician regional government highlighted “the fruitful meeting” with the head of the Buenos Aires Executive, whom he thanked for “his commitment to strengthening institutional collaboration between territories.”

The Spanish community in Argentina is the largest abroad, with almost 500,000 residents; Of this, Galician accounts for almost 50% and the bulk resides in Buenos Aires and the province of the same name. EFE
