ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women’s tennis team won its 19th straight match and set a new program record with its 27th win of the season in a 4-0 win over Chicago State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon (May 4) at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Michigan took the doubles point, winning matches at No. 3 and No. 1 for the early lead. At No. 3, Lily Jones and Julia Fliegner dropped just one game in a 6-1 win at No. 3.

UM’s top pair of Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller picked up their 20th win of the season, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and never looking back in a 6-2 win to clinch the doubles point.

In singles action, Michigan quickly took control, winning 31 of the first 33 games played. The Wolverines won all six first sets, four of them 6-0.

Piper Charney won her 17th straight singles match, not dropping a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5. The win marked her 34th of the season, moving her up to No. 6 on the single-season list.

Moments later, Fliegner followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 for Michigan’s third point of the afternoon.

From there, both Miller and Jones were each one game away from winning. Miller did the honors, not dropping a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at the top spot for Michigan’s fourth point of the afternoon. The victory was Miller’s ninth in a row and the 94th of her career as she is one victory away from entering the top 10 in career wins.

UM has set a new program standard with its 27th win of the season, topping the previous record of 26 set during the 2015 season. Michigan’s 19-match winning streak is the second-longest in program history, one off the 20 straight matches won during that same 2015 season.

With the win, Michigan has advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament to face Notre Dame on Sunday (May 5) at 1 pm Admission to the match at the Varsity Tennis Center is free.
