With the participation of more than 90 delegates, including nearly 70 foreigners from about 25 countries, the VIII International Seminar on Peace and for the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases is held in Guantánamo.

The event, sponsored by the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the People (ICAP), brings together academics, union leaders and progressives who advocate for a better possible world such as Iraklis Tsavdaridis, executive secretary of the World Peace Council.

With its main headquarters in Guantanamo’s Plaza de la Revolución Mariana Grajales Coello, during the Seminar there will be master conferences on the impact of the more than 800 foreign military bases in several countries, and it will once again be a platform to advocate for the closure of these enclaves, the end of Israel’s genocide of the people of Palestine, the cessation of the criminal US economic and financial blockade of Cuba, and the withdrawal of the Caribbean nation from the spurious list of countries that sponsor terrorism.

At the opening of the Seminar, interventions were heard by Fernando González Llort, Hero of the Republic of Cuba and President of ICAP, and Alis Azahares Torreblanca, Governor of Guantánamo, who presented a conference on the economic, social and cultural life of the easternmost and most mountainous territory of Cuba.

As is traditional in these biannual events, on Sunday, May 5, the pacifists present in Guantánamo will visit the municipality of Caimanera, bordering the illegal Yankee military base located in the bay for 121 years, and from that marine town they will launch the declaration final and proclamation for world peace.
