This Sunday the traditional Race for Heroes, organized by the Matamoros Corporation, in which 750 athletes participated in honor of the soldiers and military personnel who have been injured defending the country.

The opening of the day was in charge of the Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez, who would initially give a speech praising the brave work of the uniformed men; however, He was interrupted by the audience who booed him, shouted and in chorus shouted “out, out.”

Seeing that the minister was not allowed to speak and that the start of such a precious event was being torpedoed, one of the organizers took the microphone and, obviously upset, demanded respect and invited the dissatisfied to leave the place.

”Sorry, Mr. Minister, I interrupt you. This is a race that for 16 years has been a scene of solidarity and tribute to the heroes of the country, It is not the place for people to express themselves on other issues, Therefore, as I know that you are people who are respectful and supportive of our heroes, I ask for your respect,” the organizer said to the excited audience.

The woman addressed one of the protesters whom she invited to run to vent. “Look, sir, we invite you to go to the starting line so you can let off some steam.”said.

The race for the Heroes has been organized since 2009 by the Matamoros Corporation and its objective is to “promote social inclusion through education, employability, rehabilitation through sport and care in foster homes.” During this edition, the participants ran in modalities 10k and 5k.

This is not the first time that members of the Petro government have been booed at public events; the president himself and vice president Francia Márquez have been interrupted in their interventions in scenarios of this type or in other meetings with the communities.

Now, the booing of the minister occurs in the midst of national discontent over the death of four soldiers, who were left defenseless in the midst of an attack by dissidents of the Central General Staff in Algeria, Cauca. The country learned several audios of the soldiers during the attack in which they asked for help and shouted “they left us to die.”
