President Gustavo Petro praised the outstanding work of José Liñán Murgas, who was the first manager of the San José de Maicao Hospital. Liñán witnessed the birth and evolution of this healthcare center 15 years ago, which revolutionized hospital construction standards in Colombia and became a national benchmark.
During the inauguration of a hospitalization room and the presentation of new extramural equipment for the preventive health care model of the San José de Maicao Hospital, President Petro He highlighted that the State’s intervention in a health center has as its main objective its accreditation and the improvement of its indicators to achieve standards of excellence.

José Liñán Murgas shared his experience as manager and auditor during the construction and first years of operation of the San José de Maicao Hospital. This center, built by a hospital consortium from Catalonia, represented a milestone in Colombian hospital architecture, forcing the Ministry of Health to modify its construction standards.
With an initial investment of 45 million pesos, financed mostly by the hospital’s own resources and contributions from the Government of La Guajira, the San José de Maicao Hospital began operations in 1999. It soon became a benchmark in health services, generating profits and establishing alliances with national and international institutions.

However, management problems and the interference of political interests led to the financial deterioration of the hospital, culminating in its intervention by the National Government. Despite efforts to recover, Hospital San José de Maicao still faces challenges in reaching its full potential.
President Petro highlighted the fundamental role of José Liñán Murgas in the history of the San José de Maicao Hospital, recognizing his dedication and the standard of excellence that he established during his management. He stressed that the intervention of a health center must have as its main objective its improvement and its ability to provide quality care to the community.
