A rusty and corroded walkway that does not invite you to parade

Rust here, rust there, rust everywhere. It could be said, in fact, that it is an overpass that, today, is all rust. An exaggerated demonstration, perhaps, but one that makes it clear that, at the very least, we are before a catwalk that does not invite you to parade. The one that has been connecting Valdegastea with the western area of Logroño for more than 20 years, saving the train tracks, has been at the center of neighborhood complaints for the past decade due to its notable deterioration.

Thus, the poor condition of the pedestrian crossing between Gonzalo de Berceo and Fuenmayor streets worsens while residents continue to wait for a solution. A solution that, despite being announced, does not arrive. “The problem is not new and is getting worse, it is a narrow, rusty and slippery walkway on rainy days… if the ramp is bad, the stairs are even worse,” they point out at the foot of it as it is an itinerary widely used, whether you like it or not, due to the lack of alternatives.

“You pass because you have no other choice, but you begin to be there to avoid it… and beyond the rust you can see that there is corrosion and decomposition of parts of the metal, with bulges on the floor and even loose material,” add those who Every day they are forced to use it.

Those who live on Purita Ugalde and Paula Montalt streets, around Fontanillas Park, have been waiting for years. To begin with, due to the undergrounding of the railway route, and as it does not seem close – or even that it will be -, they are awaiting at least a project to condition and improve the footbridge. Its maintenance and cleaning would be the minimum required, and a conservation plan, at this point, is a constant in participatory budgets year after year. “We constantly remind you of this,” agree the boards of directors of both the Valdegastea neighborhood association and that of El Cubo. Before and now.

The ramp doesn’t look any better.

In this sense, last term the City Council of the capital of La Rioja contracted a project to improve it and, after studying other more complex alternatives, opted to “resolve the urgent problems in terms of user safety and protection of their materials.” » without carrying out any work.

Already in this, the current government team announced in Diario LA RIOJA last summer that the walkway between Gonzalo de Berceo and Fuenmayor would be one of the first on the list within the municipal plans to act on all of them beyond the sheet metal and the painting, but that was in August and today nothing is known. “It will be done,” they limit themselves to adding nine months later.

From Valdegastea and El Cubo, in any case, they are already thinking about asking for explanations in future meetings and district meetings. And, as the two main parties involved in a lawsuit that has been gaining strength since the last work to clean it up was carried out in 2014, they realize that quite a few users put the emphasis on a problem awaiting a solution.

«They have to do something and now, because it is not acceptable that while in phase 1 of the burial everything has been attention, with Vara de Rey at the head, because it is further away and less visible, they leave it abandoned by the hand of God”, they sentence both sides in the middle of the move towards the IES Escultor Daniel, demanding its rehabilitation or modernization.
