La Rioja and La Pampa. This was stated by Centro Comercial, who maintains that there is no law or rule that prevents it from opening on Sundays and added that supermarkets do not want to do so so as not to have conflicts with the Commercial Employees Union.

La Rioja and La Pampa are the only two provinces in the country in which supermarkets do not open on Sundays.

This was stated by the president of the Commercial and Industrial Center of La Rioja (CCI), Juan Keulián, when referring to the controversy that arises from time to time regarding the non-opening of supermarkets in the province on Sundays.

“La Rioja and La Pampa are the only two provinces that do not open supermarkets on Sundays,” he said.

Keulián added that currently there is no regulation or law that in La Rioja prevents supermarkets from opening their doors on Sunday, but that companies do not do so to avoid conflict with the Trade Employees Union.

«There is nothing that prevents opening on Sundays, the supermarkets do not do so so as not to come into conflict with the union. Furthermore, when it was open on Sundays it was never the same staff that worked on Sundays. “The workers were alternating,” he said.

Even the businessman maintained that it was economically convenient for those employees who worked on Sundays to do so. “It would be good for many because that day they would earn double and at the end of the month they may have an interesting difference in money,” he said.

It must be remembered that supermarkets stopped opening their doors on Sundays during the pandemic and after COVID 19 was overcome they did not reopen. During the pandemic, the Government ordered supermarkets to close on Sundays to avoid greater movement of people, but the measure was never lifted. In addition, there is strong resistance from the Trade Union to employees in the sector having to work on Sundays, beyond the extra payment. Despite this, Keulián maintains that currently no law prevents these large businesses from opening their doors.
