“El Críquet” is recognized as the first urban wetland in Valparaíso – G5noticias

After a long process that involved different organizations and institutions, today the place has the long-awaited name.

The recognition given by the Ministry of the Environment to Laguna El Críquet and Quebrada Honda – or “Piuke Ko” for the surrounding community – was cataloged as a historic day by those present, which since this year has been designated as an Urban Wetland. first of its category in the city of Valparaíso and eighteenth in the region, corresponding to a riparian and artificial storage wetland system of 2.57 hectares.

It should be noted that this process was raised and pushed by the different social organizations dedicated to the conservation and protection of natural heritage and that, finally, it came to fruition after the document presented by the Citizen Mayor’s Office in December 2021, where the designation subsequently received.

Camila Jahn, member of the “Piuke Ko” group, highlighted that it was a work of around ten years and that “today we can already with a little relief feel that this fight and work rests on more people and institutions.” Likewise, Catalina García, a lawyer who accompanied the process and is part of the “BioReDes” organization, added that “we hope that the management plan that accompanies it will not only remain on paper, but will actually involve the community.” in the ecological and social regeneration of this space and understanding it as a common good.”

Along the same lines, Mayor Jorge Sharp stated that “the challenge now is to build a good management plan for the wetland and, in addition, advance to other urban wetlands in other sectors of the city. Valparaíso is a city with tremendous environmental wealth that we have to take care of for the future of new generations.”

For his part, Hernán Ramírez, Seremi of the Environment, highlighted that this fact “reinforces our commitment to continue protecting our natural ecosystems in the Valparaíso Region and to continue working together with the municipality to advance in the protection of other areas of this commune. ”.

Finally, the director of Environment of the municipality, Alina Moya, highlighted about this process that “it is an initiative that people have pushed for many years and that today we finally have a formal act that allows us to advance in the next initiatives that it has. “to do with the real and concrete protection of this space.”
