Several violent incidents and arrests were recorded during the Cinco de Mayo weekend in San José, however, authorities assured that none of these events occurred during the celebrations.

“Many people and their families were able to celebrate healthily during the day. Several children were seen in the parade,” said Tanya Hernández, police spokesperson.

Police said the official events were peaceful without any serious incidents, but this was not the case in other areas of the city.

“Individuals were climbing on top of police vehicles, there was an incident where someone under the influence collided with a police vehicle,” Hernández explained.

There was also a double stabbing, 17 people were arrested for felonies, 8 vehicles and 6 firearms were confiscated, and 156 traffic tickets were handed out.

Although police said these incidents were not related to the main events, the closure of King Street due to the parade affected merchants, including the Lucky7 supermarket.

They had to deal with some people who broke in to steal and some customers who were under the influence of alcohol, while other businesses preferred to close their doors.

Authorities indicated that they hope to be part of next year’s celebrations again, not only to enforce the law, but also to celebrate with the community.
