The National Customs Service has already begun to work, together with other institutions, in the preparation of an important meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that will take place in Chile in October 2025: the Regional Meeting of the Working Group of the Network of First Line for Latin America and the Caribbean (FLO-LATAM).

For these purposes, the Scientific Secretary of the IAEA and person in charge of the Regional Network of First Line Officers for Latin America and the Caribbean (FLO-LATAM), Mirza Mohamed, led a series of preparatory meetings virtually from Vienna, where the headquarters of this organization.

The rest of the team in charge of the meeting met at the National Customs Directorate, in Valparaíso: the Head of International Relations of the Cuban Customs and president of the FLO-LATAM Network, Ernesto Azcuy; the Vice President of the FLO-LATAM Network and Chilean Customs professional, Constanza Bucarey; from the Customs Police of Costa Rica, Angie Calderón; of the Uruguayan Air Force, Héctor Ferrer; and from the Federal Police of Brazil, Carlos Faria.

“The execution of this activity is part of the permanent work of Customs in the area of ​​Security, related to the control of Weapons of Mass Destruction and dual-use merchandise, particularly in the area of ​​control of radiological and nuclear material, considering compliance of national regulations and existing international commitments. In this area, the IAEA considers our country as a fundamental axis for the implementation of a nuclear security architecture in the region,” explained the Deputy Director of Customs Inspection, José Luis Castro.

The preparation meetings held at the end of April also considered a field visit to the Logistics Support Extension Zone (ZEAL) together with a team of inspectors from the Valparaíso Regional Customs.

Among the objectives of the Regional Meeting of the Working Group of the Network of First Line Officers for Latin America and the Caribbean (FLO-LATAM) of the IAEA, are to share experiences in detection operations and nuclear security architecture and make presentations on detection and challenges in the sustainability of Materials Outside Regulatory Control (MORC), in addition to advancing the establishment of cooperation mechanisms in the region.
