The cargo airport that would be located in the Llano de la Virgen, between Altamira and Garzón. The ambitious project, led by the representative of the peace seat for Huila and Caquetá, Jhon Fredy Núñez Ramos, promises to be a development catalyst for southern Colombia, benefiting regions such as Huila, Caquetá, Putumayo, Nariño, Cauca and Tolima.

The representative emphasized the strategic importance of supporting a project of this magnitude for southern Colombia. He explained that, during the conversations held with the Aerocivil aviation authorities, It was confirmed that the proposed location meets all the climatic conditions necessary for the construction of an international cargo airport.

He highlighted that the area experiences a stable climate throughout the year, with minimal rainfall and optimal conditions for air operations. Furthermore, he highlighted that the absence of mountains in the surrounding area would facilitate the takeoff of cargo aircraft with capacities of up to 55 to 60 tons.

Where would the airport be located?

In a facility that has remained unused. In reference to the internationally recognized SKGZ airport, construction dating back to 1935; however, it has remained inactive since then.

Initially owned by the municipality of Garzón, this airfield was transferred to the Ministry of Defense, where it currently houses a small military base. The surrounding land is currently under lease. It should be noted that the current airport runway has a length of 1,600 meters.

In this sense, the construction of this airport is presented as a crucial solution for the regions of the Huila, Tolima, Caquetá, Putumayo and Nariño.

The next step on the path towards the completion of the airport will be the Public audience scheduled for this Friday, May 10 in Altamira. Event that will feature the presence of key figures, including the Minister of Agriculture and the Director of Civil Aeronautics, who will evaluate the interest and viability of the project together with the local community, producers and farmers.

“It is imperative that we all attend this hearing to urge the national government to recognize our need for this airport, which represents the fundamental solution to start the export of our products and provide a comprehensive economic response to the entire region,” explained Núñez.
