The United Nations (UN) officially recognizes 195 countries around the world, each one with its geographical particularities. However, there is one in particular that stands out for its unique location: Kiribatian island country located in the four hemispheres of the planet.
This country, made up of a set of 33 coral atolls and the volcanic island Banaba, extends over an area of more than three million square kilometers in the Central Pacific Ocean.
Although geographically impressive, Kiribati faces serious threats due to its low medium altitude, making it especially vulnerable to sea level rise caused by climate change.
According to estimates, this country could disappear in just a decade, which has led to consideration of plans for re location for its inhabitants in neighboring countries like New Zealand and Australia.
In addition to its unique location, Kiribati holds other records, such as being the first populated place in the world which circles the sun every year, thus being the first sun to welcome the new year.
Despite its small size, Kiribati is home to a dense population of approximately 160 inhabitants per square kilometerwith more than half of its inhabitants aged between 15 and 64 years old. However, life expectancy at birth is only 60 yearswith a rate of significant infant mortality.
To the extent that climate change continues to threaten the existence of Kiribati, this island country stands out as a vivid example of the challenges facing nations in a constantly changing world geographical and environmental.
