Attention! New balance scam alerted in Cuba

Sources from the ruling party warned of a new (old) scam with cell phone balances in Cuba. Why new-old? Well, they are the “same dog with a different collar” and Cubans continue to fall for these false messages. We detail it below.

According to an expanded report from the official media, Cubadebate, from its “USB” channel, it all begins with a call to someone’s cell phone claiming that they made a wrong bank transfer to your account and you even receive a false message from the Telecommunications Company by SMS. (ETECSA).

In this case, what the ruling party states was 450 Cuban pesos and of course it asks you to send the money back to an account that it will give you. The first step is to verify if there was this movement in reality in your account, by verifying that it is impossible that you did not detect 450 pesos, the suspicion of a possible attempt to scam the balance arises.

The second thing you can do is examine the message that supposedly confirms the transfer. At first glance, it looks like a standard message from Etecsa, the Cuban telecommunications company. However, one detail may catch your attention: instead of showing the name of the usual contact, a private number appears. This is a red light for what will be, a clearly scam.

They warn of balance scam in Cuba

The inconsistencies in the information and the presence of a private number in the ETECSA confirmation message lead you to the conclusion that it is a probable balance transfer scam attempt, so the first advice will always be: “Do not forward the money under any circumstances“.

Already in April of this year, Etecsa warned about a new type of scam that circulated through text messages (SMS) and phone calls. In this same style.

According to that warning from a few weeks ago, “if you receive an SMS with a supposed money transfer and then a call assuring you that it was transferred to you in error and get the money back, we suggest you check the last 10 operations on Transfermóvil first.”

“Remember that the SMS generated by Transfermóvil are never from a private number, they are always in the name of Pago por Móvil,” they warned.
