This Tuesday, May 7, the presentation of the “Tarapacá Regional Diagnosis: Workforce Study of Large Chilean Mining 2023-2032” was carried out, prepared by the CCM-Eleva Alliance.

The event took place in the Aula Magna of the Arturo Prat University and was attended by the Seremi of Labor, Ignacio Prieto; the Seremi Energy, and Seremi(s) of Mining, Zifora Sidgman; Seremi Women and Gender Equality, Noemí Salas, among other authorities.

The study shows how the mining workforce in the Tarapacá region is composed, detailing the number of workers that large-scale mining will require in the Tarapacá region, the job profiles that will be most needed by 2032 and the percentage of female participation, among other findings.

According to the report, currently, Tarapacá employs more than 19 thousand workers linked to large-scale mining, 4 thousand more people than in 2020. In detail, mining companies concentrate 28% and supplier companies 72% of the total workers.

In the next ten years, mining in Tarapacá will demand more than 5,877 workers. Furthermore, the demand for human capital by 2032 in the region is equivalent to 17% of what is required at the national level.

The study details that Regional demand by 2032 will focus on the profiles of maintainers, operators and maintenance professionals. In particular, the mechanical maintainer profile will demand 2,171 workers in 10 years, representing 36.9% of the regional demand.

Participation of women in mining

Regarding the number of women who work in mining, the study indicates that there is 13.2% female participation and 46% local hiring.

Tarapacá has the highest participation of women in value chain positions, mainly professionals and maintainers compared to the national total.

Likewise, in the region the participation of women in positions of directors and heads decreased, but they increased in the positions of assistant managers and supervisors.
