He Committee for Santa Cruz expressed its condemnation and repudiation of the cyber attack that the newspaper EL DEBER suffered on the night of Sunday, May 5, two days after World Press Freedom Day was commemorated.

“This attack represents an attack against one of the fundamental rights that a media and any citizen; which is established in article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: ‘Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; This right includes the right not to be disturbed because of his opinions, to investigate and receive information and opinions, and to disseminate them, without limitation of borders, by any means of expression,’” the statement states.

In a context where journalists face multiple challenges daily to carry out their work with freedom and independence, for the Civic Committee, these types of attacks are even more worrying.

In this sense, he demanded that the competent authorities carry out an exhaustive and transparent investigation to identify those responsible for this attack and apply the corresponding sanctions.

“It is the task of governments to respect freedom of expression, comply with the laws, investigate – through the corresponding authorities – and punish the guilty; so that this type of attack against free expression is sanctioned,” the letter details.

“No to censorship! Yes to freedom of the press!” the statement concludes.

The Committee’s statement joins the statements of different institutions and political actors that have condemned this attack and demanded an exhaustive investigation. The Ministry of Government even referred to the issue, stating that, “under no circumstances can press freedom be put at risk.”
