There are several causes that affect the instability of the National Electrical System (SEN) with an effect on the unavailability of generation capacities.
On this topic, Lázaro Guerra Hernández, technical director of the Unión Eléctrica, explained to Cuban TV that in recent days the deficit has generally remained around 700 to 900 megawatts, caused by the departure of several units from the system, to comply with its planned maintenance.
He explained that five blocks of thermoelectric power plants (CTE) are out for maintenance: blocks one and three of the Santa Cruz CTE, six of the Nuevitas CTE, eight of the Mariel CTE, and one of the Felton CTE.
Despite people’s natural incomprehension – since the blackout is annoying for everyone – it must always be explained again that not providing maintenance today means not having thermoelectric power tomorrow, and that is the base generation of the system.
Guerra Hernández stated that the trend continues to be towards an increase in maximum demand, both during peak hours and in the early morning, and this is something that also affects availability, despite the fact that, certainly, the generation has been depressed.
He highlighted that the units that are out for maintenance are first planned periods that must be complied with, in addition to the fact that their conditions no longer allowed them to continue operating. To the best of my knowledge, they came out for maintenance or a breakdown.
In this sense, he highlighted that they continue to check all the processes, to optimize these actions in terms of time, and stressed that they were planned with the intention of arriving in better conditions to the summer months, which are the ones with the greatest demand. .
