The general sewage collector of the city of Santa Fe runs along Gálvez/Pellegrini Boulevard. In recent years, several inconveniences have been caused along the route, generating sinkholes at different intersections.

After what happened with the sinkhole on Boulevard and 9 de Julio, Aguas Santafesinas (Assa) began to carry out video inspections in different areas along the boulevard, especially towards the east. This inspection allows us to see internally what the situation of the pipe is and thus have a detailed survey of different spaces and thus be able to foresee future effects.

On Thursday night, Assa operators carried out a new survey of the general sewage collector on Gálvez and Dorrego boulevards, and in Avellaneda. The work consisted of verification with personnel descending through the access cameras to carry out video inspection in sections of the interior of the conduit.

With these two sections that were inspected, Assa has video-inspected some nine sections to update information about what is happening throughout the city’s maximum sewer. Video inspection consists of introducing a particular camera, which is resistant to hydrogen sulfide, which causes corrosion in the structures of sewage structures.

With a controlled demolition, work begins in the sinkhole on Boulevard and 9 de Julio

More than a month

The sinkhole on Pellegrini Boulevard and 9 de Julio has been going on for almost half a month since it originated on April 4. Since then, Assa, with the collaboration of the Faculty of Engineering and Water Sciences (Fich-UNL), carried out an inspection with georadar and also video inspections to verify what was affected to proceed with the repair.

Then the stages were defined to rebuild the affected pipe. To execute the first stage, we are waiting for the sheet piles to arrive to contain the sector and thus be able to carry out a controlled demolition of the rest of the road in order to begin the excavation; the extraction of all remains resulting from the sinking; and clean the duct.

Once this stage is complete, Aguas Santafesinas will be certain about what type of rehabilitation or renovation of the general sewer collector will need to be done. “Once it is clean, we will be able to establish what type of hydraulic work will be necessary for the rehabilitation of the section. We have indications but with the obstruction that exists as a result of the sinking, until the cleaning is done we will not be able to be certain,” Germán Nessier, spokesperson for Assa, commented some time ago in an interview with this medium.
