Orange alert for risk of flooding of the Magdalena River in the rural area of ​​Malambo

Orange alert declared due to imminent risk of flooding of the Magdalena River to more than 1,500 families in Malambo.

The emergency occurs in the Caimital village, due to the flooding that the Magdalena River has experienced as it passes through the Atlantic. The force of the tributary has generated an undercut that puts not only this rural area of ​​the municipality, but three more neighborhoods in the urban area at risk of flooding.

The river has already taken away crops of banana, cassava, corn, vegetables, among others. The mobilization of farmers has also been complicated by the strong erosion.

They will install a Unified Command Post

This Tuesday A Unified Command Post (PMU) will be installed in the affected area that will have the presence of different relief organizations.

The Mayor Yenis Orozcomade a desperate appeal to the Government.

“We ask the National Risk Management Unit to come visit this land that is being undermined. We no longer have a path to travel. I request immediate help for these sectors, before a tragedy occurs“said the mayor.

A few weeks ago the municipality declared a public calamity, however, has not received support from the National Risk Management Unit.

For his part, the Secretary of Government, Augusto Rivero, said that the PMU will have the participation of Firefighters, Civil Defense, Government Secretariat, Risk Management and the National Police.

“We will carry out permanent monitoring of the risk on the slope of the river, in Caimital. We urge the National Government and the National Risk and Disaster Management Unit to intervene immediately, since the population is in danger and needs urgent help”, he stated.
