VATICAN CITY, May 21.- Pope Francis has appointed Monsignor Antoine Camilleri, titular archbishop of Skálholt, and currently nuncio in Ethiopia and Djibouti, as his representative in Cuba.

The Holy Father has chosen the Maltese prelate, former undersecretary of the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State and until now delegate to the African Union and apostolic delegate in Somalia.

Monsignor Antoine Camilleri was born in Sliema, Malta, on August 20, 1965, a priest since 1991 and a graduate in Jurisprudence and Canon Law, Camilleri entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on January 9, 1999.

In recent years he has worked in the Pontifical Representations in Papua New Guinea, Uganda, Cuba, and in the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State, where Benedict XVI had appointed him undersecretary on February 22, 2013.

On September 3, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him titular archbishop of Skálholt and apostolic nuncio. On October 4, 2019 he received episcopal ordination.

On the following October 31, he was appointed apostolic nuncio in Ethiopia and Djibouti, special representative to the African Union and apostolic delegate in Somalia. Monsignor Camilleri speaks seven languages: Italian, English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Romanian and Russian, according to the digital news outlet Vatican News.
