A strong thunderstorm destroyed the stage this Wednesday night where the presidential candidate for the Citizen Movement, Jorge Álvarez Máynez, closed the campaign of Lorenia Canavati von Borstel, MC candidate for mayor of San Pedro Garza García, in Nuevo León . A gust of wind has brought down the roof and the giant screen on the stage, which was about to crush the candidate and his collaborators. The structure collapsed on the audience that was in the first rows. At least six people have died and 56 have been injured, as confirmed by Miguel Bernardo Treviño de Hoyos, mayor of San Pedro.

A few minutes after the accident, Álvarez Máynez published on his X account that he was safe: “After the accident in San Pedro Garza, where a gust of wind collapsed the stage where we were, I went to the San José hospital. “I am fine and in communication with state authorities to follow up on what happened,” he wrote. The candidate reported that he had left the hospital to return to the scene of the accident and accompany the victims.

The Emecista candidate who was closing her campaign at the event, Lorenia Canavati, regretted the accident and said she was in coordination with the authorities to support: “There are no words to describe the pain and sadness that the terrible accident that occurred on the day of today at our campaign event. At this moment the only thing I can think about is those affected and their families. My team and I are already coordinating with the authorities so that they are given all the attention and support. They are the most important thing,” she said.

A video has gone viral on social networks in which several people try to rescue others on whom a giant metal structure has fallen. Cries for help and desperation are heard from those who try to help. The accident occurred in El Obispo park, located on the outskirts of San Pedro Garza García—one of the richest municipalities in Latin America—, an area far from the wealthiest neighborhoods. This space is located just over seven kilometers from the center of the municipality.

In a video uploaded on his networks, in which he appears completely dressed in black, the governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García, asked the population of the metropolitan area of ​​the State to take shelter in their homes from the storm. “15 minutes ago there was already an accident, strong winds knocked down a stage, unfortunately there are injuries, security forces and ambulances are already there,” he said. Later, in statements to the press, García confirmed that there had been five deaths and at least 50 injured. The death toll later rose to six.

Members of Bronco, the group that had scheduled a performance at the closing of Canavati’s campaign, appeared before the cameras to confirm that they and their staff They were safe.

Álvarez Máynez has canceled his visits scheduled for this Thursday to the States of Hidalgo and Tlaxcala, as well as his return flight: “I will be in Nuevo León to monitor the situation and the victims,” he said.
